What are the best ways to practice earthing? 

As we enjoy a world rife with modern amenities — from electronics to synthetic materials — our bodies disconnect from nature. This can result in insomnia, body aches, depression, high blood pressure, and other ailments. Now and then, it’s beneficial to reconnect to Mother Earth to help restore vitality, reset body rhythms, and balance hormones to feel our best. Fortunately, there is an easy and effective way to do this. It’s called earthing. 

Get Intimate with the Earth

Earthing, or grounding, involves physically pressing our bare bodies — especially the soles of our feet — against the earth’s surface so that electrons from the ground transfer into our bodies. This can provide a much-needed jolt back to wellness and biochemical regularity. We are, after all, electric beings whose cells and body tissues crackle with currents. The closer we are to nature, the more those currents can recalibrate. We can discharge negative energy and absorb the good stuff. Curious? Try hugging the ground to help give your heart and other organs a surge of nature’s power!

What are the best ways to practice earthing?

  1. Take a barefoot walk on grass, dirt, mud, or sand. Our ancestors used to do it! Sink your heels in. Feel the soothing texture and let the moist matter get between your toes.  Give your feet a break — keeping them locked in shoes all day is unnatural and uncomfortable. Just be sure to avoid sharp rocks or broken glass. Avoid manmade materials like concrete and pavement. 
  2. Sleep outdoors on the ground for a nap or an overnight slumber. 
  3. Work outside. 
  4. Schedule daily leisure time outdoors, whether during lunchtime or after work and school.. Go to the beach. Explore your local parks. Go on a hike and then take off your shoes for a little while. 
  5. Buy earthing equipment. Sometimes, going outside is not convenient. In that case, there are therapeutic earthing mats and sheets you can buy for your floor, sofa, or bed. These mats can be plugged into an electrical outlet or connected to a grounding rod outside. You can sit, sleep, or stand on them. There are also earthing socks, shoes, and body bands that can be worn on the wrist, ankle, or waist. These electrical gadgets literally keep you grounded and connected without going outside.

Experts say that 40 minutes a day can spark healing. However, many practitioners aim for six to eight hours. 

A Range of Benefits

According to the National Institutes of Health, any of the above activities function as environmental medicine that can boost immunity, reduce inflammation and pain, and make one sleep better. Earthing can reset biological clocks and bring down cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can cause high blood sugar and high blood pressure when too elevated.  By healing inflammation through earthing, people can lower their risk of Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses, many doctors say.  So, the next time you’re feeling less-than-stellar when sitting in an office or apartment, don’t let the free and roaming electrons of the earth go to waste. Head outside and get your daily dose of skin-to-green or skin-to-dirt relief.
